Making Cards / Normal printing quantities?
« on: September 10, 2017, 08:01:24 pm »
So, here's the deal: I need to print out a small number of cards for myself (such as Grand Creator Fausticorn) as well as several copies of the blank pony cards for commissioning art at cons (or at least at Nightmare Nights this year). I figure that I might as well at the same time print out several copies of some other cards, such as the CofK promo cards, to pass out to people while at the convention space.

Here's the thing: having never done this before and never looked into it, I have no idea what kind of numbers I should be shooting for. Part of me says I should print something like 25 copies of each of the CofK promo cards so that I won't run out of them; part of me says that's a ridiculous number and I'll never find 25 people to hand them out to; then part of me suggests giving my extras at the end of the con to N.A. Larson or whomever might be around.

So is there some number I should shoot for, here? How many do people who sell their cards usually order, and how long do they normally last? If I'm going to hand off my extras at the end of the con to someone who goes to more cons, should I be printing out a few more to help out? I'm kind of lost here.

Drawing Board / Workshopping Shipwrecker CMC into ponies.
« on: September 07, 2017, 10:16:54 pm »
So, I think that the Shipwrecker CMC that I had people help me put together last year might just work better as Pony cards rather than their own special card type that needs explaining, buuuuuuuut I think the current way I have it worded is unnecessarily clunky.

Quote
[Ability name] (Shipwreck): While this card is in your hand, you may discard this card to discard one Ship from the grid. If you use 3 Shipwrecker cards in the same turn, discard every card from the grid except the start card. This power cannot be copied.

I modeled the wording after the guide for Replace, but there's a few things I feel don't work. Firstly, is there any reason to keep the "cannot be copied" clause? I may have misunderstood how Copy works if this line is necessary, because I always thought the pony had to be on the grid for it to copy another card. Alternatively, if the copy ability is technically active while in your hand, would the Shipwreck ability be too powerful if it could be copied? (That last one might be something I should test.)

Secondly, wouldn't it be more elegant to say "Discard this card from your hand to X" without the "While this card is in your hand" clause? As long as "from your hand" is specified, that explicitly means you cannot use it from the grid, and it cuts out a lot of what seems to me unnecessary wording.

Lastly, the secondary ability of nuking the board if you play 3 of them probably needs to be slightly rephrased to refer to the Shipwreck ability rather than the Shipwrecker card names since that limits future Shipwrecker ponies to always need that title.

The Ship card Murder Turns Me On from the No Holds Barred expansion is not in the TSSSF card spreadsheet. Just a note for whenever that gets updated.

Card Rules / [ICR] No Ponies Can Pony Two Ponies to Pony
« on: August 25, 2017, 11:57:59 am »
ICR for Individual Card Ruling

Though this might involve several other goals. I think I can change the title if need be.

Anyway, here's a question because it came up in my last game: is this card looking at name keywords, or at individual pony cards?

My friends reasoned that, since Fanfic Author Twilight and Super Spy Twilight were both on the grid, they both counted as Twilight for the purpose of shipping her with a total of six ponies, even though they weren't the same card. I let it go at the time because I was outnumbered, but based on the point value alone I think it should be one single pony card being shipped with six ponies.

Shipfic Q&A / Used and Unused Assets
« on: August 24, 2017, 11:10:02 pm »
So, in light of needing to make a few cards missing from my collection that have come out since my big printing adventure, I was briefly rooting around the card art repository, and I noticed a few things.

The first, is that there are completed but unused art, such as for a goal called Baka Kawaii Kissu (which obviously was meant for Weeabu Paradaisu), and that I'd love to make those into cards, probably with some help again.

The second thing I noticed was that, in cross-referencing with the text-only card database, that at least a few of these unused art pieces have been made into cards, most notably Cat Burglar Scootaloo and Con Mare Sweetie Belle in an expansion called Cutie Mark Criminals.

Now, of course I'm curious where these expansions can be found, but mostly I want to ask if anyone had done any cross-referencing as to what all art has remained unused? If no one has, I might embark on that quest myself, but I don't want to put that much work into something if it's already been done.

I think you're some kind of deviated prevert. I think General Ripper found out about your preversion, and that you were organizing some kind of mutiny of preverts. Now MOVE!

So, I haven't played TSSSF too many times as of yet, and most of the time it's been with my full collection of 500-some-odd cards, but every time the game has had some huge memorable moment.

Just such a moment occurred today.

So gather 'round, all you would-be shippers, with your rose-tinted glasses and your pints of love poisons, and listen to my tale of how the multiverse broke and all the fics burned.

First, we have the setup. Baka Senpai Discord had taken Twilight's place at the center of the fanfic universe. Three figures have emerged from the shadows at his will to write the stories that will shape our little ponies' destinies, and their love lives.

Before anyone knew it, 1/2 2/3 of a point had been won. Soon Senpai Flash Sentry-Kun and Nipon ni Naritai Twilight Sparkle joined Discord in the proto-world of fanfiction. Mr. Cake proposed to Mrs. Cake not once, but twice, as they practiced swinging, trying to find their place in the new order. The Mistress of Equality herself, Starlight Glimmer, briefly made an appearance to smack down all would-be points to less than 1, before being replaced outright by a strangely serene Fluttershy leading the worshipers of eldritch gods.

Somehow a T kept being made.

Then, things started heating up. Adjutant hit the board, sewing the seeds of chaos and rule-breaking that would soon follow as a single turn saw two goals won and five or six ships played. The board was misread (because someone kept thinking all Twilight Sparkles are seemingly princesses) and play passed to me. Senpai Flash Sentry-Kun, who had been happily engaged with Discord, soon found himself pet-sitting for Nipon ii Naritai Twilight Sparkle, and suddenly all Tartarus started breaking loose. With a combination of replace, search, copies, and forgetting that Adjutant's power couldn't be copied, I played Japanese Brad's power about 8 times, playing probably 15 ships in the process and gaining... 1 goal. No unicorns were played during this turn.

The board had grown once again, and it was time to cut it down to size. Derpy made an appearance, and another well-placed love poison saw the board nearly wiped, then with a few more ships, another T formed.

As turns went by, the discard piles grew considerably. When Mahou Shoujo Derpy cast her pretty spell over everyone, we knew it was the beginning of the end. The points were pretty tensely matched: 6, 8, and 9 2/3. The one behind in the race had a plan, though. With a well-placed search, Inconvenient Trixie found her way onto the field, immediately followed by a protective Rainbow Powered Maude Pie. By this point in the game, the room had become quite physically hot, and two out of three of us wanted the game to end. I knew what I had to do.

But I had not the power to do so. I emptied my hand, but for a single ship, winning three goals in the process and pushing me to fifteen points, but the game was still afoot. I drew seven ponies, hoping for a Search. I got a Copy, but I was in luck! There was a search on the board! Two turns remained.

A nearly-thought out Love Poison took Trixie out from underneath Maude's protective watch, but a miscalculation meant she was still sitting inconveniently on the field. A small chunk of the grid was gone. One turn remained.

As attempts were made to prolong the game, my opponents were unaware of my plan. A secondary plan was attempted, to bring the Mistress of Equality back, but I had ended up drawing it by accident. A few points were won in that last turn, but it was for naught.

As it comes back to me, I play the one ship I had to use the Copy, taking the Search power on the board, and doing the one thing you should never do: I combined a Bag of Holding with a Portable Hole.

Website Issues / [Fixed]News section of main site

The news button on the main site organizes news in the wrong order. The oldest post is displayed first and the newest at the bottom.

I should hope this can be fixed by changing the display order from "descending" to "ascending" (or vice-versa; I have always been confused by those two terms). Best catch it now before you have so many articles that the news section becomes useless.

EDIT: fixed at some point. Thank you!

Conventions / Nightmare Nights Dallas 2017
« on: June 15, 2017, 02:12:50 pm »
Despite me increasing distance from the show, I've decided to go to Nighmare Nights again this year. I expect I'll be spending a majority of my time in whatever room they have set up for board gaming.

Be there or be square.

...

Wait, most boards are square.

Be there AND be square.

Conventions / TFF (Texas Furry Fiesta) 2017
« on: February 17, 2017, 03:10:06 pm »
Hey all.

I don't know how many of you are local to Texas, or how many may even be going to TFF this year even if they're not local, but I'll be going there myself the weekend it's running, this coming March (24th-26th).

I plan on bringing my full collection of TSSSF*, plus Secret Hitler that I haven't had the chance to play yet.

I know of at least one other person who should probably be there whom I met at both TFF and Nightmare Nights Dallas last year, but I don't think he ever registered here and was hoping to see a few others around who might be interested in playing.

*Collection is 500-some odd large and includes:
  • Core 1.1.6 (inclu. alternate art of Druid Fluttershy)
  • The CofK updates to Extra Credit and Ponyville University
  • All finished expansions by original team at Horrible People
  • Shipwrecker CMC I slapped together with help from Western and Ithry
  • Fan Pon
  • a Fallout: Equestria expansion
  • Alternate Universe mini-expansion (based on the end of season 5)
  • Under Review mini-expansion
  • But Busters (or something like that) mini-expansion (a... PG-13 expansion that honestly makes me slightly uncomfortable)
  • five Big Mac cards commissioned and sold by Peter New
  • Sappho, the pony card commissioned and sold by Jenna Blake
  • basically everything else people have posted in this forum with the permission to print
  • maybe some others I'm forgetting (there are a fair number of unmarked cards)

There are only four sets I'm aware of that I don't have and two of those are by Ithry.

Shipfic Q&A / Fan Pon?
« on: October 28, 2016, 11:22:23 pm »
So, at Nightmare Nights I ended up buying pretty much every TSSSF card people were selling, even ones that I'm not sure I'll be playing with much if at all. Since actually taking a look through all the cards, I started to question the Fan Pon expansion. Can anyone tell me the story behind this?

Google gives me next to nothing (the only real results being to this site) and I'm left wondering several things. I have like 41 cards of quite varying quality in both art and text (several of which I'm left questioning how they're supposed to work at all), and I have started to worry that someone may have gathered together a bunch of individual fan cards and passed them off as an expansion?

I'm of the mindset to not attribute to malice what can easily be explained by incompetence, and I really doubt anyone involved would be doing this with any negative intent, but still... I can't help but wonder. (Also since it comes with Chrome but not the other browser ponies posted on these forums I wonder if I got a pack that wasn't the full set by accident.)

Shipfic Q&A / [Question]Shai Ni, Shipfic Filly
« on: October 25, 2016, 02:56:12 pm »
So, every time I play this card, the question comes up of what exactly it does. Does copying Fanfic Author Twilight mean that Shai Ni cannot be moved once played? And, if so, what happens when someone tries to nuke the board?

The last time I played with her and someone nuked the board we decided, "well, Twilight is over here on her own now and Shai Ni is over there on her own now" which in retrospect ignored whatever line of ships were between the two, but none of knew exactly how to interpret her ability.

General Discussion / Storage/Sleeves?
« on: October 25, 2016, 12:49:08 pm »
I'm kind of new to the whole board gaming thing — at least as much as the next kid that was raised on Monopoly, Uno, Sorry, etc. — and while I've gone from TCG to TCG over the years, I've treated my cards well enough that I've never felt the need for protecting them.

However, now that I've grabbed several limited-print cards as well as some autographed ones (I practically want to frame my Sir McBiggun), in addition to something Ithry pointed out to me regarding the difference in size of metric vs. standard cards, I realize I need something a bit more than the little cardboard box I have them in right now.

So, does anyone have any advice for card sleeves or storage? Any particular brands or styles I should look for or avoid? How do other people like to store their cards?

Shipfic Q&A / Aftermath of Nightmare Nights Dallas
« on: October 25, 2016, 10:52:25 am »
I thought it might be worth it to take a bit of a retrospective on the TSSSF panel Saturday night and kind of analyze what worked, what didn't, and how it might be improved. Now, far be it from me to make any calls on that last one since I didn't have a hand in organizing it, but I figured I'd take some initiative in at least drumming up some discussion.

What Worked

With N. A. Larson, Sky, and Brony Brewer there, I felt it there was a nice distribution of instructors to players. Plus, Sky killed it with the initial explanation of the game. Having a nice amount of players already familiar with the game helped too, being able to take some of the load as different people stepped up to clarify things for the newbies.

I think the simple fact players kept going until midnight when it was planned to end at 10 marks it as a resounding success.

What Didn't

As I said in person, most of the problems the panel had came down to the room and thus were really out of your control. The thin square tables in the room weren't great for grid construction. There was also the unfortunate fact that the video games that had been set up next door had to be moved into the same room, which was on top of the Ponyfinder game that... I think was running long? A bit too much hullabaloo in the background, but again I don't think any of it could have been avoided.

What Was Learned

Location location location?

Again, the panel itself seemed like a runaway success, although only one person ended up registering here since then. At the very least, more people were brought into the Shipfic community, and that's always great. If possible, I think getting a dedicated room for the panel would get things going more smoothly next time, although I have no idea if that's even a feasible request.

Going by what happened at my own table, I wonder if getting a bit more organization when splitting people off into groups would make things run smoother? The group I was in only had one newbie, and she was actually playing with someone who was familiar with the game but sitting out, so that he could kind of guide her, and so most everyone in that game knew what they were doing. Point being, perhaps if a conscious effort was made to mix newbies with those familiar with the game it could ease pressure off of the newbies and lessen the responsibilities of the organizers?

Take all this with a grain of salt, of course (I mean, I know most of my attention at the time was on the game I was playing), but what do you all think?

Showcase / Shipwrecker CMC - full
« on: September 24, 2016, 09:33:09 pm »
So I got in contact with Horrible People and, long story short, they gave me the go-ahead to complete and share the unfinished Shipwrecker cards from the Power Gaming expansion. So, a bit of fiddling in GIMP later, and here they are. Major thanks to Ithry not just for the flavor text (which he created himself), but for helping with rules wording. Equally big thanks to Western, who provided files like the blank Shipwrecker front for these cards.

Incidentally I have the layered projects saved, so I can make edits to these incredibly easy if need be.
