Showcase / Re: Between the Lines Mini Expansion
« on: March 27, 2017, 11:34:11 am »
My design journals go into more detail about the mascots and the roles they are playing: http://ithryskylark.deviantart.com/journal/?catpath=/ The conventions they are from are listed at the bottom of the card as well.

I'm not super jazzed about the behind shots either. As you said, I think it works for Rokuet, but not  so much for Canni. I had mentioned changing angles for Canni's card to Arc, but she's been insanely busy lately with her job, so it looks like she didn't have time to make adjustments. Not the worst though, and it somewhat makes sense with the action shot, so I'm not super upset about it or anything.
Well, I mean for me it's more a matter of knowing the mascots as characters rather than just being able to look at the text and go "oh, okay, so that's the mascot for X con". Honestly, Canni just might be the only mascot I'd be that familiar with across all pony conventions, simply because of the multiple voiced animations I've seen with her. I've recognized all the roles so far (except that it took a few days to get "Jane Eyre" since I never read that one).

Yeah, I didn't mean to imply that the from-behind arts were bad, just that I found myself thinking they could have been a bit more eye-catching from the front. I don't have nearly enough experience in creating or critiquing art to make those sorts of calls.

I submitted an idea. Should I say what it was, or just keep an eye out for the cards later?

I'll admit a lot of these are kind of going over my head; Canni is the only mascot so far that I recognize.

That said, I'm having a bit of a hard time liking the art of the two from behind (Rokuet and Canni). With Rokuet being a flip card, I guess it makes a certain kind of sense, but still for the both of them they end up losing a lot of potential detail.

There are a few others down in the Showcase subforum that have bleed images, as well, if you just need to fill out a page.

Not that I think you'd want to print them, but I slapped together (with some generous help from Ithry and Western) some unused art with early design concepts for the Shipwrecker CMC trio.

That's adorable! That's about all I have to say on the matter.

TSSSF is different from MtG, Yugioh, etc., because while those games have some backstory, gameplay does not advance that story. In TSSSF, you actually build stories as you play, thus it is important to have characters (and situations) you care about. This is the main reason I don't play with all the cards at once (the other of course is unfun mechanics).
True enough, though my point was that I've always been one more interested in the mechanics than the characters of a given game, at least as far as card games are concerned.

Goal and Ship art is harder/more expensive to commission than Pony card art because they will usually involve multiple characters, doing something specific, possibly in a specific setting. Also, most artists who offer at-con sketch commissions will usually be doing character sketches.
I've been to exactly two conventions in my life, both just last year, I've never commissioned a work nor even thought about doing so, and the little experience I've had with artists who do commissions has been seeing various "commissions open" and "commissions closed" sketches. The reasons why don't really make sense to me, but I will keep it in mind if ever I get that far (I have a horrible tendency to not projects).

The flavor text is a parody of the flavor text on Blue-Eyes White Dragon. I wanted to stay as close to the source material/reference as possible.
Oh, no, I totally get that, believe me. I had three Blue-Eyes back in the day (never did have the fusion), so I recognized it almost immediately. It's just that 90% of comments I see in relation to Ember are usually along the lines of "b-baka!", so to see otherwise is refreshing.

I'm with Ithry on this one.

A2 would be my preferred choice, because after looking up what the card does, there probably should be some villains in there somewhere. Coming from a decade of being a Vorthos, I think cards always read better when there's a synergy between their rules, title, art, and even flavor text; while cards in a set can build off one another, having elements of a card not line up with each other leads to the card feeling confused, or like it wasn't thought through. In that respect the A sketches are the best bet because they actually show what the card is supposed to do.

Between A1 and A2 is tricky. Honestly I would like to know what the plans for the rest of the set are. It's hard to say with this only being the second card art whether the typewriter being front and center would be too overused to go with A1. I equally like both ideas in the A sketches: the one that the typewriter was the weapon to defeat the villains and the one that the typewriter was a villain that was defeated. Of the two, I can't decide which is the better idea.

C2 is in third place just because of how silly it is. I'm not really convinced that it belongs on this specific Twilight, but it's a brilliant little portrayal of our beloved little shipping purple horse. I'd love to see this design used elsewhere, but again, I'm not really convinced that Element of Magic Twilight is the card to have it on.

Oh, she was by and large loved by the fandom, but just like Pinkie Pride, there was a small subset that thought it was just another entry in the show and kind of grew resentful that it was as popular as it became. It just happened that I was among that subset with Ember; I really liked the Dragon King (whose name I forget), but she was just kind of meh for me and its just been kind of grating how many people latched onto her.

And, you know, bonus points for the flavor text not being some low-hanging fruit about her "not like she likes you or anything".

Point.

It hadn't even entered my mind that these weren't for playtesting. I've never been so attached to a character that I've wanted to see them as a card in anything (I come from about... a decade of M:tG, and probably >5 years of Yu-Gi-Oh before that), but I can admit a lot of people seem to want to do just that. Personally I see the character card market kind of flooded and would rather a card that I make come up more often. Then again, I typically play with the entire 500-some-odd collection I have, so that could be part of it.

So far I've just been slipping a couple of old M:tG cards in the fronts of my goals sleeves. Been trying to figure out if "events" is a viable mechanic in this game.

I didn't know that ships and goals would be harder to commission, though. I've had zero experience with commissions and next-to-zero experience with artist that even do commissions. Good to know, though.

There's more than that... we're in the process of putting all the printed cards into a spreadsheet, so stay turned ;)
Must... eat... brains...

[/lamejoke]

That aside, I seem to have forgotten to mention a Steven Universe mini-expansion, though I haven't actually gone through all my collection to see what I was forgetting; all of that was just off the top of my head. Even without a full visual spoiler of every card that's ever been printed, having some sort of checklist of what card packs have been made and who made them would be really useful. Like I said, I'm only really aware of four other packs that I don't have: two from Ithry, one from the Starswirl Academy group (I've put off buying that one because I hadn't been playing TSSSF), and one I cannot mention on these forums. I don't know of any list of what people have made for TSSSF, so it's incredibly hard to know what I'm missing.

Conventions / TFF (Texas Furry Fiesta) 2017
« on: February 17, 2017, 03:10:06 pm »
Hey all.

I don't know how many of you are local to Texas, or how many may even be going to TFF this year even if they're not local, but I'll be going there myself the weekend it's running, this coming March (24th-26th).

I plan on bringing my full collection of TSSSF*, plus Secret Hitler that I haven't had the chance to play yet.

I know of at least one other person who should probably be there whom I met at both TFF and Nightmare Nights Dallas last year, but I don't think he ever registered here and was hoping to see a few others around who might be interested in playing.

*Collection is 500-some odd large and includes:
  • Core 1.1.6 (inclu. alternate art of Druid Fluttershy)
  • The CofK updates to Extra Credit and Ponyville University
  • All finished expansions by original team at Horrible People
  • Shipwrecker CMC I slapped together with help from Western and Ithry
  • Fan Pon
  • a Fallout: Equestria expansion
  • Alternate Universe mini-expansion (based on the end of season 5)
  • Under Review mini-expansion
  • But Busters (or something like that) mini-expansion (a... PG-13 expansion that honestly makes me slightly uncomfortable)
  • five Big Mac cards commissioned and sold by Peter New
  • Sappho, the pony card commissioned and sold by Jenna Blake
  • basically everything else people have posted in this forum with the permission to print
  • maybe some others I'm forgetting (there are a fair number of unmarked cards)

There are only four sets I'm aware of that I don't have and two of those are by Ithry.

Personally I like C4.

Of the three sketches, I like C the most because it conveys the over-the-top silliness the game is known for most clearly. A just looks like she's in a book tornado or something, and B is really down-to-earth -- relatable on its own, but I feel if you're going to make something for this game, you might as well crank the dial up on the silliness.

Of the four styles, I prefer 4 the most because it makes Twilighy pop out the most, grabbing your eye the most easily. I'll admit I'm biased toward both 3 and 4 because they're full color, but honestly I think styles 1 and 2 would look better if they were monochrome instead of a hint of color. I was finding myself focusing in on the colored patches and missing the greater scene. Between 3 and 4, it's kind of tough, but ultimately I think since the character is off-center style 4 is able to draw more attention to her.

If you go with sketch A or B, I would change my style choice to 3. The character being in the center of the frame means it doesn't need quite as much attention on it.

Sorry I'm coming in late to this, I've been preoccupied for the last several months with Ponyfinder and haven't been here to check on things.

Obviously I'm kind of late to this, but after Nightmare Nights I got sucked into Ponyfinder and haven't touched... well, any other board game for months. I busted out TSSSF last weekend, though, and decided to make a glorious comeback.

All that aside, I voted for Magical Mares just now. It was a hard decision for me between that and Rock Hard, but I decided there needs to be more anime in my shipping card game.

General Discussion / Re: The TSSSF Quotelist

Wow. You know, I've thought of making a small list for myself just to see some of the larger fics play out (such as Of Ponies and Peril), but this is simply marvelous. Kudos for completing such an endeavor.

Also my hat's off to you for coming up with that story to explain all the flavor quotes. Just... Wow.
