Shipfic Q&A / Re: Used and Unused Assets
« on: August 25, 2017, 10:00:50 am »
Blood and Shadows is one I'd like to know if it ever made into a card. I could see it being a Kefentse x Celestia or OC x Celestia Goal (or break up an OC with Celestia and replace it with Kefentse), but I could also see it being a Ship with the caption Pixel Prism gave it back when she posted it on Tumblr: *Slurp, slurp*

A lot of that artwork is from private commissions HPG did back in the day. Whenever we find such a card, we add it to the database. The only way to find out if an artwork is ACTUALLY unused is to ask HPG.

...Which I did for Baka Kawaii Kissu, because I've been thinking about that one myself! 😜 Based on the art style, I think it was actually meant to be part of the Cherry Blossoms Under Hoof fic from Core Deck. I would put that art on a Ship card and give it a title more reflective of the scene, like "Romantic Rivals" or just "Rivals". The way I see it, Dash and Trixie are both trying to capture the heart of the same pony (the one Dash is talking to on Tsundere Rainbow Dash), and in this scene, Trixie has been waiting in Dash's path to tell her she has no chance because Trixie is prettier/refined/richer than she is (throw in a Fufufu or an Ohoho for good measure). I haven't watched anime in a long time, so I'm open to suggestions with the flavor text/title. This card's been on the back burner for a while, but since you also have an interest, let's revive it.

Another one I'm working on is the unused Fluffle Puff art (also going on a Ship card), which I asked Fluffy Mixer about at BronyCon, which reminds me I need to get in touch with him to see if he has an idea for flavor text.

Oh, and Cutie Mark Criminals was made by Preston Moore (‪@TailsFox88‬ on Twitter).

General Discussion / Re: What Are Your Favorite TSSSF Cards?

Sometimes I wonder if Trixie does more harm than good. What do you think?

Honestly, I don't know how "straightforward" it is, because this means cards like Tantabus and Jumpin' Jack activate BEFORE Goals are replenished, which means you have to break the grid BEFORE you know which Ponies will be relevant. I don't think most players are aware of this situation, but however people are handling it is probably fine (I've never had anyone ask me about it, at least).

What exactly do you mean here in regards to a activating a pony's power that's on the grid?

Ah, yes. My article assumes the reader is using the adjacent ship rule described in Section VI of the long-form rules. I find it odd that this is referred as an "Advanced Rule," since its use appears to be fairly standard. Also, I think this may answer your first question as well. Please reply if it doesn't.

The more I read and the more I play, the more appreciation I gain for the six base pony abilities. Coming in from the super-complex Magic collection, I initially wanted to come up with unique specials and whatnot, but it's slowly becoming clear how important it is to keep them at that simple collection of abilities.

This is pretty much my train-of-thought as well, but there's a lot more to say on the subject of Special powers!

Since you brought it up ;) the phases of a turn, as laid out by HPG, are documented in Section 5.7 of the Style Guide.

1) Beginning of Turn
2) Replenish Goals
3) Play Cards
4) Redraw Hand
5) End of Turn

I don't know if this will ever come up in an article, but we definitely need to talk about power resolution order/grid cleanup/Goal requirement checks at some point.

yeah, we'll definitely talk about what effect the grid has on the game. As to different shapes, according to HPG's Tumblr post I linked in my last post, they originally tried a hex grid. I imagine that would make it hard to play a Ship between 2 adjacent Ponies.

If the points aren't awarded by a judge, you're left with winning by beating your opponents or completing objectives. Since TSSSF was specifically designed NOT to be head-to-head (again, see the Tumblr post), that leaves completing objectives. If all the objectives are present simultaneously, the game becomes very predictable, like chess with it standard openings. Having the objectives on rotating Goal cards keeps the game fresh, and difficult to plan around (again, because TSSSF is not head-to-head). If you want your victory points (achieved Goals) go down, you should play with Ithry's #MadeOurMark cards ;)

Redrawing up to the hand limit keeps the game moving. The more cards you have, the more you can do. Also, it encourages players to get rid of (play) their "bad" cards. As to seven, I imagine the number was determined by trial and error, but I know that lets you make 3 plays, and hang on one Pony card.

The grid is meant to represent a shipping chart, but I take it you're wondering about the mechanical implications and consequences of having or not having a grid. We hadn't talked about doing an article specifically about the grid, but we might if the topic isn't adequately explored elsewhere. Certainly it will be touched on when we discuss Ship cards, slice (the ability to discard a Ship card from the grid, i.e. grid destruction), and the flavor/mechanics balance of TSSSF.

I think we've pretty much covered why points are used instead of a judge, but this concept will be revisited in the flavor/mechanics article.

I'm not sure what you mean by "refill the hand." How else would players not run out of cards to play?

Glad you're looking forward to these articles! Are there any topics or questions in particular you'd like to see us address? Also, good point on the number of players needed for TSSSF vs CAH!
